Jill Thompson is a well established comic book artist and book illustrator. She is best known for her work on Sandman and Scary Godmother. She is also developing a devoted fan base around the animal paranormal investigator stories she does with Evan Dorkin. Those stories started in the Dark Horse Book of… series and recently appeared in their own four issue mini series Beasts of Burden. Thompson has won several Eisner awards including for Scary Godmother and her work with Dorkin at Dark Horse.
In 1987 she graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago. After graduating she started working in comics for Comico on Fathom and The Elementals. In 1990 she started her long working relationship with DC Comics. In 1990, she started on Wonder Woman and in 1991 she started on Sandman. Afterwards she also worked on Swamp Thing, Black Orchid, Books of Magic, The Invisibles, The Dead Boy Detectives and other titles.
In 1997, The Scary Godmother, Thompson's first children's book, was released. Thompson went onto to create several more The Scary Godmother books, comics and a stage play adaptation. There were also two The Scary Godmother television specials.
Thompson has also done a number of other children stories books including three books in the Magic Trixie series, and she has collaborated with former wrestler-turned-author Mick Foley to illustrate Mick Foley ‘s Halloween Hijinx.
